Diaper Waste Sensitization Initiative by a Union Leader in Kilifi

As the Organising Secretary of our Union’s Kilifi Branch, Kevin Anungo Shikuku, Public Health Officer, has been leading a community sensitization initiative focused on the growing public health and environmental challenge of improper diaper disposal. This effort aims to educate households, caregivers, and institutions on safe diaper waste handling to protect our environment, sanitation systems, and community health.

The initiative has drawn national attention and was recently featured on Standard Media, Citizen TV Kenya, highlighting the urgent need for awareness, policy direction, and collective responsibility in managing diaper waste.

Through barazas, clean-up activities, and household education, he is empowering communities with practical knowledge on proper disposal while advocating for structured waste management solutions and policy support.

This initiative demonstrates how public health officers, working closely with communities and through Union structures, can drive impactful change beyond routine duties. It is his hope that this model can be replicated across counties to strengthen environmental health practices nationwide.
